Brief note on the History of the town/city

It is one of the important religious town of the Haryana State. It is located 18 kms. East of Ambala and 19 kms West of Kurukshetra Dham District town of Mahabharata. The town is situated on G.T. Road ( Sher Shah Suri Marg, National Highway No. 1) and on the bank of Markanda holy river, Where an ancient Temple named “MARKANDESHWAR MANDIR” and historic “Markandeshwar Mahadev Shiv Mandir” exists. A big Qilla was constructed here by Mugal Emperor, which was conquered by BANDA BAHADUR, Bhai Bhagel, Bhai Karan Singh Nimly, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Now it is known as Quilla Sikhan, where photos as well as Nishans still exists at DARSHNI DEODI of Gurudwara Mastgarh Sahib, Shahabad Markanda which came into existence in 14 century after the name of SHER SHAH. The Municipal Committee was established in 1885. The town is also connected with main Railway line i.e. Jammu, Ambala, Delhi, Jaipur, Bombay etc. having its own Station. The boys as well as Girls of this town are International Hockey players and have participated in Olympics and Asia cups. Recently the Girls of Shahabad Markanda have topped the National Junior Hockey Championship. Many champions, who studied in the colleges of Shahabad Markanda are now serving as I.A.S. / IPS., Tehsildar, BDPO’s, Doctors, Engineers, Advocates etc. It is the head quarter of Tehsil and block development named Shahabad Markanda. It is pertinent to mention here that “GRAM NAYALYA” has been established by the Government in 2010 and now the town has been upgraded as Sub-Division of the Distt. Kurukshetra in May-2011 which started its function on 2nd September 2011. The town is well reputed all over India for its Ponda-Cane, Potatoes, Sunflower, Rice and Wheat product as well as Solvent and Chemical and Agro Industries. During the last 60 years a lot of improvement and change has been made by the industry. The Haryana Government has also set up Rice-Mill, Cold storages , building as well as Sugar Mill in the Co-operative Sector. HUDA have also set up Urban Estate in this town to cater the needs of general public. The latest delimitation of the Municipal area was set up in 1994 having a total area of about 18 sq. kms. The town has 17 ward out of 8 General, 2 BC, 1 SC Gen. & 6 reserved for women (1SC Lady + 5 Gen. Lady) which elected during Municipal Election held in 2010. Shahabad town’s population as per census 2001 is 37289 & as per census 2011 population is 42666. The city is progressing day by day.
